The department imparts under graduate training for Medical, Dental, Pharmacy, Medical laboratory and Nursing undergraduate students. as well as students of Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology and Dental Hygienist courses.
Post graduate training for M.D. Biochemistry and Diploma in Clinical Pathology are also conducted in the department. The department is a recognized research center leading to the award of PhD in Biochemistry under the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Kerala.
Clinical Activities
Routine and emergency biochemical investigations are done in the Clinical Chemistry Laboratories attached to the collegiate hospitals. The department also caters to the needs of other hospitals in Thiruvananthapuram District, Kerala State, India.
Hormone Assays, Metabolic Screening for Inherited Diseases, Electrophoresis, Chromatography, Biochemical Hematology and Assay of Tumor Markers are done at the Specialized Clinical Chemistry Laboratory in the Department.
Research Activities
In addition to the research activities associated with the post-graduate programme, the department has been associated with several research projects sponsored by the Science, Technology and Environment Department, Government of Kerala and SAT Endowment Fund and research projects of the various departments of the Medical College.
Continuing Medical Education
The Department regularly organizes Continuing Medical Education Programmes for Post-Graduates in Medicine and other medical specialties. The faculty members of the department participate in CME programmes of other disciplines as resource persons.
